All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group Reformed

The All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group was reconstituted last night (12 July), electing Officers and welcoming new MPs. The meeting, a requirement in the new Parliament, was the first time the Group met since the General Election and means the Group can continue its singular task, to support the sport of golf. Parliamentary Golf Group welcomes Muirfield decision

The All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group has welcomed The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers’ decision to admit women as members for the first time in its history. Golf’s ruling body, The R&A had previously removed Muirfield as a host venue for The Open Championship after the club failed to change its admission rules in 2016. A two-thirds majority of members was required to make the change, with 80% of votes in favour of admitting female members. The R&A yesterday (14 March) confirmed the vote meant that Muirfield will be reinstated to the list of courses that can host The Open. Parliamentary Golf Group welcomes Lundin Ladies’ stalwart as Honorary Member

A Lundin Links woman who has devoted 60 years to developing golf in the community has received Honorary Membership of the All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group. Helen Melville, who moved to Lundin Links in 1956 when her father, Tim Low, took up a job at Lundin Golf Club, was presented with a certificate by Co-Chairman of the Group and North East Fife MP Stephen Gethins at an event attended by many club members and friends on Friday (3 March). Parliamentary Golf Group welcomes return of The Open to Kent

The All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group has welcomed the announcement that The Open will return to Royal St George’s in 2020. It was announced earlier this week that the tournament will return to the historic Kent links for the 15th time. Royal St George’s first hosted The Open in 1894, the first time the Championship was hosted outside of Scotland, and its most recent staging was in 2011 when Darren Clarke lifted the Claret Jug. Significant transport improvements are required before the tournament takes place to allow spectators access to Royal St George’s, and the Group has worked closely with The R&A, Network Rail, Dover District Council and Kent County Council, as well as local MPs, to ensure that these are…

Health benefits of golf discussed in Parliament

The All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group welcomed representatives of the Golf and Health project to the Palace of Westminster yesterday evening (17 January). Executive Director for Golf and Health, and Chief Medical Officer at the European Tour Golf, Dr Roger Hawkes, and lead researcher, Dr Andrew Murray of the University of Edinburgh, made a presentation to Peers, MPs and associate members on the health benefits of the sport. The project is supported by the World Golf Foundation, with the aim to increase interest and participation in golf. The presentation focused on the considerable physical and mental health benefits of golf. Research carried out by the project has found that key benefits include improvements in life expectancy, cholesterol levels and body composition.…

Parliamentary Golf Group disappointed at HLF announcement and closure of Beckenham Place Park Golf Course

The Parliamentary Golf Group has expressed its extreme disappointment at both the closure of Beckenham Place Park Golf Course, and the confirmation of the Heritage Lottery Fund grant made yesterday, which seals the destruction of the course. The course, which was the first ever public golf course in England, and the only public course in central London, was closed by Lewisham Council as part of their proposed, potential, ‘improvements’ to Beckenham Place Park, using Heritage Lottery Fund money. The Group visited the course in July to show their support for those campaigning to keep it open, and also wrote at length to Lewisham Council, and specifically the Mayor of Lewisham and Mayor of London, asking them to reconsider the plans…

Last night the All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group held its inaugural annual dinner in the Palace of Westminster. The dinner was hosted by Group Vice-Chairman, Baroness Nye of Lambeth, on the House of Lords terrace, and brought together Members of both Houses of Parliament, Associate Members, Group supporters and dinner sponsors, Covéa Insurance. The Group was established in 2015, and has since grown to over 60 Members from both Houses and across all major parties. Yesterday evening (Monday 24 October) the All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group welcomed representatives from Sky Sports Golf to the Palace of Westminster. Parliament welcomes health benefits of golf

Members of Parliament have hailed the health benefits of golf, following a recently published scientific review by researchers at the University of Edinburgh. A motion has been tabled in the House of Commons welcoming the review, which highlights the considerable physical and mental health benefits of the sport. The review, supported by the World Golf Foundation, found that golfers live longer than non-golfers, playing golf improves cholesterol levels and body composition, and also appears to improve wellness and self-confidence. Golf is also expected to decrease the risk of more than 40 major chronic diseases. Parliament welcomes UK involvement in Ryder Cup

The Parliamentary Golf Group has wished the European Ryder Cup team well ahead of the forthcoming competition in Minnesota, USA. In a letter to the Captain of Team Europe, Darren Clarke, Group Chairman Karl McCartney MP passed on the best wishes of all Members of the Group, and expressed hope “that the event will help to promote our game across the UK and inspire more people to pick up their clubs, take part in physical activity, and keep fit and healthy”. Team Europe features six English players, including recent Olympic Gold Medal winner and England Golf ambassador Justin Rose, and one from Northern Ireland.
